The World Cup . . . Portland Style!
What a great Sunday to be Downtown Portland. The sun was shining, not a cloud in the sky, the temperature was hovering around 80 at about noon! PERFECT.
I went Downtown to do a hyper-localism on a brand new urban park, Director Park -- and that post is coming. I got side tracked when I noticed that Pioneer Square was filling up.
Pioneer Square in the center of town. During Christmas, we have the tree lighting ceremony, and the big tree is displayed in Pioneer Square. There's concerts, farmers' markets, "Flicks on Bricks" (summer outdoor films), a gathering place for the community.
Today -- we had WORLD CUP SOCCER playing!! A wonderful big screen, people gathered around.
Pioneer Square is advertised as being "Portland's Living Room" and with so many people watching TV today -- rooting for their team -- it was a great family affair!!

If that's the living room, then the fountain/park in the Pearl must be the family room.
And congrats on breaking into third place in Oregon.
That would have been a great way to watch the game!
You really do have a wonderful city!
enjoy
your friend in Charlottesville Virginia!
Looks fun and what great weather. It is 941am here and it's already 84 degrees. Jealous? Yes, I AM!
How wonderful is that! It sure is a pretty city! I enjoyed your part of the world at Rain Camp....and also the coast!
It was an exciting game and how wonderful that the USA is so embracing foot ball.
Hi Jim -- that's funny!! The Pearl is the family room!! (and thanks!)
Hey Joan -- it was very fun.
Hi Charles . . . Portland is cool!
Hey Jenna -- our weather has sucked for months. It's like we went from fall, to winter, back to fall again. A few nice, warm days. Today it's cool, overcast, and back to fall again :-( I THRIVE in summer!
Hi Lori . . . I missed Rain Camp (only 'cause I went down to LA) It was a nice summer day when you attended. A tad on the hot side, but pretty!!
Hey Liz -- Yeah, that was a pretty even match -- except for that one point ;-) I like soccer, the fast paced games are so much better.
That is really, really neat. Portland has always seemed like a great place to me. I would have loved spending the day outside in a park watching the world cup. It was actually the first sunny day we've had here in what seems like weeks!
I love downtown Portland, haven't been there for years. What a neat idea to have the big screen in Pioneer Square. Were you inspired to buy a Big Mac?
Carla - I attended a World Cup party yesterday and as we watched the streets of Spain celebrate we wondered where people would gather if the USA won. I personally didn't think people would travel to a place like Time Square, I think they'll go to places close to home like Pioneer Square.
P.S. I'm jealous that Portland has their very own living room, TV and all.
Hi Carissa -- it was very fun! Portland is a nice place.
Hey Cynthia -- I did have a hamburger last night for dinner, but home grilled ;-) I like the fries though!
Hi Michelle . . . USA doesn't get that turned on by the World Cup. Not like a Super Bowl win. I like Soccer and it was a good match. Where's the remote??
Carla! Love your post especially since I love Soccer! Yeah! What a great sight! It was awesome to see the heightened interest here in the states. Thanks for making me smile!
Hi Olga . . . I like soccer a lot too! It's a high action sport, really gets the crowd involved!
Wow, how neat the community coming together rooting for their team.. I sure everyone had a wonderful time.
